United States House of Representatives elections, 1800

The U.S. House election, 1800 was an election for the United States House of Representatives in 1800 which coincided with the election of President Thomas Jefferson.

The results of this election were the result of backlash over the passing of the Alien and Sedition Acts by the Federalist-controlled government. This law was seen as a severe violation of the freedoms of speech and the press presented in the Bill of Rights. As a result, Federalists were soundly defeated in the House, Federalist President John Adams lost his reelection bid to Thomas Jefferson, and state-legislatures became Democratic-Republican controlled (and thus promptly voted in legislators that gave the Democratic-Republicans a majority in the Senate)

Elections by state

Unlike modern day House elections, each state held its election on different days. The table below shows the date of each state's election in chronological order and the makeup of the state contingents before and after the elections. “Und.” is short for “undecided”, for races in which no candidate won the seat outright, forcing a second election.
