Amargosa Desert

Amargosa Desert

The Amargosa Desert is located in western Nevada, USA, along the border with California. It is largely coincident with the geographic Amargosa Valley. The desert lies at an elevation of about 2,600 - 2,750 feet, and includes the community of Amargosa Valley, Nevada (formerly Lathrop Wells), which lies at the southern end of the desert. The Amargosa desert lies between the Funeral Mountains on the west and Yucca Mountain and the Nellis Air Force Range to the east, in Nye County.

The desert is named after the Amargosa River, so-named for the Spanish word for bitter because of the bitter taste of the water.cite book|first=Erwin|last=Gudde| coauthors =William Bright |title=California Place Names|year=2004|edition=Fourth ed.|publisher=University of California Press|pages=p. 11|id=ISBN 0-520-24217-3]
