WOCH-CA is a class-A television station in Chicago, Illinois that broadcasts as the Korean Broadcasting Channel, or KBC. The station transmits programs from the Korean Broadcasting System, based in Seoul, South Korea. The station currently broadcasts on UHF channel 41. It is owned by KM Communications, who also owns Azteca América affiliate WOCK-CA.

History

WOCH started broadcasting on September 27, 1989 as W04CK and has since broadcast on several channels. Recently, it moved to its present channel location on channel 41 to avoid interference with the signal of Milwaukee NBC affiliate WTMJ-TV. WOCH upgraded to class-A status on December 29 2005, thus protecting their channel position from further displacements. During its days on Channel 28 (which was its location prior to moving to Channel 41) it ran The Box Music Network from 12AM-12PM with KBC programming 12PM-12AM. In 2001 when Viacom took over The Box and switched it to MTV2, WOCH began running an MTV-2 feed from DirecTV during the 12AM-12PM timeslot. This was slowly weaned out by 2003-2004.

Today, in addition to KBS programming from South Korea, and some locally-produced programs, WOCH airs non-Korean ethnic programming on weekends (such as programming from local cable television network Bostel), in a format similar to that of WFBT.

Podcast

WOCH offers a free podcast of the "KBC 930 News" (a practice that later spread to other KBC programming), with some KBS programs available for $1.99. KBC began offering podcasts on November 14, 2005.

Starting on February 6, 2006, KBC ceased the sale of KBS programming due to a dispute [http://www.kbc28.tv/2006/02/download-store-to-close.html] , while its free podcasts of local programming continued until May 10, 2006, when they were suspended due to technical difficulties.
