Popular assembly

Popular assembly

A popular assembly is a localized citizen gathering to address issues of importance to the community.

These assemblies can work with other forms of government, but the term is often used in contrast to political processes that use less direct forms of democracy, such as a national assemblies and other representative systems. These assemblies thus circumvent the nation-state and often do not receive outside recognition.

Popular assemblies are an example of autonomism.
