- Vardar Banovina
The Vardar Banovina or Vardar Banate or in
Serbo-Croat : Вардарска бановина inCyrillic ; "Vardarska banovina" in Latinic) was a province (banovina ) of theKingdom of Yugoslavia between1929 and1941 . It was located in the southernmost part of the country, encompassing the whole of today'sRepublic of Macedonia , southern parts ofCentral Serbia and southeastern parts ofKosovo . It was named after theVardar River and its administrative capital was the city ofSkopje .Borders
According to the
1931 Constitution of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, :"The Vardar Banovina is bounded on the north by the boundaries ... of the Zeta andMorava Banovina s, and on the east, south and west by the State frontiers withBulgaria ,Greece , andAlbania ."History
In 1941, the
World War II Axis Powers occupied the Vardar Banovina and divided it betweenBulgaria , German-occupiedSerbia , andAlbania under Italy . Following World War II, the southern portion of the region becameSocialist Republic of Macedonia while the northern portions were made a part of theSocialist Republic of Serbia , both within theSocialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia .References
