Shergotty meteorite

Shergotty meteorite

The Shergotty meteorite is the first example of the shergottite Mars meteorite family.

The Shergotty meteorite, a 4 kg martian meteorite, fell on Earth on Shergotty, Gaya, Bihar, India on August 25, 1865 and was retrieved by witnesses almost immediately. [ [http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/snc/shergotty.html Shergoti Meteorite - JPL, NASA] ] This meteorite is relatively young, calculated to have been formed in Mars only 165 million years ago from volcanic origin. It is composed mostly of pyroxene and thought to have undergone preterrestrial aqueous alteration for several centuries. Certain features in its interior suggest to be remanents of biofilm and their associated microbial communities.
