] now built of sandbags and similar materials. [ [http://www.army.mod.uk/royalengineers/org/21regt/deployments/4_aes/camp_smitty_1.htm Camp Smyth front gate sangar and tower] ] The term was originally used by the British Indian Army to describe a small temporary fortified positions on the North West Frontier and in Afghanistan, and is still frequently used by the British Army. "Sangar" means "barricade" in Persian. During the Northern Ireland 'troubles' the term came to be used for all fortified positions regardless of the material used in construction e.g at entrances to security force bases.
