Stepps is a small town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on the north-eastern outskirts of Glasgow. The town consists of Stepps Village, Cardowan, Stepps Hill and Millerston It had a population of 4,802 according to the 2001 census, however large scale housing developments in Cardowan and Stepps since 2001 mean that the current population is likely to be somewhat larger.

History

Originally part of the Garnkirk estate, the name for the settlement appears to post-date that of the main road through its centre, Steps Road, which was named in the 19th century and appended with a Steps Road railway station in the 1850s. The name and spelling "Stepps" only became accepted when the name of the station formally changed to Stepps in 1924.

Transport

Stepps has served as a commuter town for Glasgow. The town is served by a railway station on SPT's Cumbernauld Line, providing a quick commute to central Glasgow, and by the A80 road. The town was bypassed by the southern section of the M80 motorway in 1992; that section of motorway is still referred to locally as the Stepps Bypass. The town's main bus service is the number 36 bus.

hops

Stepps is home to few shops, though Taste Buds (takeaway cafe), De Bloemist (florist), The Ironing Basket, Callan & Co (solicitor and estate agent), a tanning salon, plus a couple of hairdressing salons all add to the slowly increasing number.
