area_code =La Línea de la Concepción (more often referred to as La Línea) is a town in
Spain , in the province of Cádiz inAndalucia . It lies on the eastern isthmus of theBay of Gibraltar on the border with theBritish overseas territory ofGibraltar , with which it has close economic and social links. The town derives its name firstly from the "línea" or boundary line separating Spain from Gibraltar and secondly from the
Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Its people are called in Spanish "linenses".Gibraltarians are referred to popularly as
llanitos , which some interpret as "people of the flatlands", from the Spanish word "llano" for flat - the people of La linea themselves used to be referred to as "Llanitos" since they actually inhabit the plains and marsh lands surrounding Gibraltar. The people of La Linea have traditionally found work in Gibraltar, arising from the days in the 18th century when Gibraltar was an important naval port. This was adversely affected by the total closure of the border by the Spanish government between
1969 and1982 because of the dispute running since 1704 between Britain and Spain over which country held the title to the sovereignty of Gibraltar. Since the border was fully reopened in1985 many Gibraltarians have moved to La Línea, where property prices and the cost of living are much lower and there is greater access to shopping, leisure facilities and entertainment.La Línea is a major supplier of fruit and vegetables to Gibraltar; other industries include the manufacture of cork, liquor, and fish paste. It is also an important military garrison with substantial fortifications and a port.
