Nageshwar Temple or Nagnath Temple is a famous
Hindu temple dedicated toLord Shiva located on the outskirts ofDwarka inGujarat .. It is one of the 12Jyotirlingas , the sacred abodes ofLord Shiva and according toHindu mythology the Nageshwar (meaning, the Lord of Snakes in Sanskrit) symbolizes the removal of poison (evil activities) byLord Shiva . Shiv Purana , the holy text forShaiva devotees, mentions that a demon namedDaaruka attacked a Shiva devotee by name Supriya and imprisoned her along with several others in his city ofDaarukavana .This place was a city of snakes and Daaruka was the king of the snakes. On the insistence of Supriya, all the prisoners started to chant the holy mantra of Shiva and instantly Lord Shiva appeared and vanquished the demon, and later started to reside here in the form of a Jyotirlinga.As a wish before dying the demon asked Lord Shiva that the place be named after him.Hence the name NaagnathReferences
