Gentisic acid is an aromatic carboxylic acid used as a sample matrix in Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Mass spectrometry.

As a hydroquinone, it is readily oxidised and is used as an antioxidant excipient in some pharmaceutical preparations.
