Len Howard

Len Howard

Len Howard was a British naturalist and musicologist.

In 1942, Howard moved from London to a cottage in Sussex, where she began studying the wild birds that lived on and around her property. Howard developed an intimate, co-habitational relationship with the birds, many of whom flew freely through and around her cottage (named "Bird Cottage"), and in some cases roosted inside of it.

Howard wrote two books (now out of print) on the subject of her birds, in which she argued that individual intelligence, and not mere instinct, is a factor in much of their behaviour. Howard paid especial attention to Great Tits in her studies, singling particularly striking individuals out for the "bird biographies" she published in various periodicals and in her books.

"Birds As Individuals" (London: Collins Press, 1952).

"Living With Birds" (London: Collins Press, 1956).
