Bundibugyo District

Bundibugyo District

Bundibugyo is a district in western Uganda, bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Like other Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town'. Tens of thousands of civilians were displaced by the insurgency of the Allied Democratic Forces in the late 1990s.

The district is relatively isolated from the rest of Uganda, as it is the only one lying on the other side of the Rwenzori Mountains, to its west. This implies that it is biogeographically part of the Congo Basin. As such it ecologically and culturally part of Central Africa, despite being politically East African.

The geographic boundaries of the district are: Semliki River to the West, the Rwenzori Mountains to the East and Lake Albert to the North.
