Grigoriopol

Grigoriopol

Grigoriopol ( _ru. Григориóполь) is a city in Transnistria, Moldova. It is the seat of the Grigoriopol sub-district of the Transnistria region. The city is located on the left bank of the river Dniester at coord|47|09|N|29|18|E|, in central Transnistria.

Along with Dubăsari, Grigoriopol is one of the only two cities in Transnistria where ethnic Moldovans are a majority.

In 1996 and in 2002, the town was the centre of a dispute regarding the attempts of local Moldovan inhabitants to use Romanian language and latin script in the Moldovan school, which is against the policy of the government of Transnistria. The Transnistrian press attacked the local authorities that allowed "the fifth column of Moldova in Transnistria" to operate. He was released on 12 September, following a protest of the OSCE mission in Moldova.
