Khakwani

Originally, the word "KHOGYANI or KHOGIANI" is used as Khakwani. The Pakhtun tribe from Khogyani District in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan , near the Jalalabad city as well as the mountain range of koh-i- sufaid or White mountain range.

History

It is originally pronounced as Khogyani or Khogiani, and in the subcontinent as Khakwani. This tribe consist of five clans, Mohsin zai, Daulat zai, Maroof zai, Saib zai and Chopan zai. Hazrat Chopan Khan Khogiani was a famous saint and his shrine is located in Ghazni. Khogiani's were a mountain tribe often indulging in wars against the shinwari and the ghilzai tribes.

Emergence in the sub-continent

The ancestors from this tribe came to the Indian Subcontinent Region some 450 years ago.The first khogiani tribal head came here was Malik Shahpal, who was invited to attend the royal court by Emperor Humanyun. He founded the famous colony Kiri Afghana in Multan city. His tribe settled there and manage to gain substantial amount of power and influence.

Following him came Khudadad Khan from Ghazni, he was from chopanzai clan, he settled near the area of Multan. His descendants influenced the region with the help of afghan kings. When Multan was annexed with Afghanistan, Nawab Ali Mohammad Khan was appointed as governor, he built the famous Mosque Ali Mohammad khan. Khakwani's continued to live around Multan holding vast tracts of land with substantial holdings in Vehari, Shujaabad, Khanewal, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Dera Ismail Khan, Rahimyar Khan, and Layyah districts of Pakistan. They are one of few wealthy and influencial families till today, and also the single largest landowners of their region.

Role during pakhtun rule

Multan during the Mughal Empire flourished and had a good administrative control, but later on during the decline of the empire it was ruled by the local pakhtun tribes lacking center control. The Khakwani tribe had good relations with the afgan kings as well as the Bahawalpur state. The tribe invited Ahmad Shah Durrani to take control of Multan state, and with there help and support Multan became the part of Durrani Empire.
